The everyday food connectionRiboflavin at the table.Milk and dairy foods are among the dietary sources of B2.

Riboflavin, or vitamin B2, helps enzymes use energy from food. It also helps other B vitamins work. We explain these connections before examining mangosteen measurements and why light exposure matters.

B2Riboflavin
A water-soluble vitamin

01 · Begin with the essentials

Help Cells Use
the Energy in Food.

The body uses riboflavin to make two coenzymes called FMN and FAD. These small molecules help enzymes carry out reactions needed for normal cell function.(1)

02 · Two coenzymes. Connected reactions.

Meet FMN
and FAD.

FMN and FAD help transfer electrons during chemical reactions. That transfer is an important part of how cells release and use energy from food.(1)

FMNFlavin mononucleotide
FADFlavin adenine dinucleotide

B2 helps use fuel; it does not provide calories itself.

FMN helps activate vitamin B6. FAD helps the body convert some tryptophan, an amino acid from protein, toward niacin.(1)

Riboflavin Status and Blood-Pressure Research

Too little riboflavin can cause cracked lips, sores at the corners of the mouth and a swollen tongue. These symptoms reflect the importance of B2 to healthy tissues.(1)

In a 16-week trial, participants received 1.6 mg of riboflavin daily or a placebo. Blood pressure fell in people with an inherited variation called MTHFR 677TT. The result concerned that genetic subgroup, so it should not be interpreted as a benefit for everyone with high blood pressure.(4)

B2 occurs in a variety of everyday foods.

What has been measured in mangosteen pericarp?

05 · Measured in pericarp

0.3mg per 100 g of tested pericarp

Riboflavin Measured in Mangosteen Pericarp

Pericarp research

An earlier Garcinia study reported riboflavin in mangosteen pericarp at 300 micrograms per 100 grams.(2), (3)

Reading the units

300 micrograms equals 0.3 milligrams. Both figures describe the same reported amount per 100 grams of tested pericarp.

After measurement, handling and storage can affect the vitamin.

06 · A vitamin with a recognizable color

Naturally Yellow.
Sensitive to Light.

Riboflavin is yellow and fluoresces under ultraviolet light. Visible and ultraviolet light can break it down.(1)

Storage matters.

A nutrient measurement belongs to the material at the time it was tested. Light exposure during handling and storage can change how much B2 remains.
