A fat-soluble vitamin.
Sunflower seeds are a dietary vitamin E source. Mangosteen’s pericarp has its own tocopherol profile.

Vitamin E is a family of related compounds, but the body uses one form to meet its nutritional requirement. This distinction is essential when reading the different tocopherols measured in mangosteen pericarp.

01 · Begin with the essentials

Which Form Meets the Body’s Needs?

Vitamin E is a family of fat-soluble compounds with antioxidant activity. Alpha-tocopherol is the form the body preferentially retains and uses to meet its vitamin E requirement.(1)

02 · One name · two groups

Vitamin E Is
More Than One Substance.

Tocopherols

αβγδ

Alpha, beta, gamma and delta forms.

Tocotrienols

αβγδ

Another four naturally occurring forms.

The eight forms differ in biological activity. They cannot simply be added together and counted as an equal amount of alpha-tocopherol.(1)

03 · The membrane connection

Protecting the Fats
in Cell Membranes.

Cell membranes contain fats that can be damaged by oxidation. Vitamin E helps protect those fats as part of the body’s antioxidant defenses.(1)

Vitamin E in Eye-Health Research

The AREDS studies tested combinations of antioxidants and minerals in people at certain stages of age-related macular degeneration. Vitamin E was one ingredient. The benefit belongs to the tested formula and patient groups, rather than vitamin E alone.(4)

Deficiency is uncommon in healthy people who absorb fats normally. For everyday nutrition, getting enough vitamin E is the aim; more of one antioxidant does not automatically provide more benefit.(1)

Nuts, seeds and oils are familiar dietary sources of vitamin E.

04 · Vitamin E across the diet

Familiar Foods. Naturally Occurring Fats.

Nuts, seeds and vegetable oils are important vitamin E sources. Other plant foods contribute, too.(1)

Which forms have been measured in mangosteen pericarp?

05 · Freeze-dried pericarp · 2023 study

Three Tocopherols.
One Research Sample.

A 2023 study identified three tocopherols in freeze-dried mangosteen pericarp: alpha, beta and gamma. The chart compares their amounts in that research sample.(2)

≈9.9 mg

Total measured tocopherols

Per 100 g of the dry study material. This is a sum of different forms, not 9.9 mg of alpha-tocopherol.

06 · Two different questions

Why the Largest Bar Is Not the Vitamin E Requirement

β

Beta-tocopherol

Beta-tocopherol was the most abundant of the three forms measured in this pericarp sample.(2)

α

Alpha-tocopherol

Alpha-tocopherol is the form used to define the amount of vitamin E people need.(1)

Whole Mangosteen Pericarp, Freeze-Dried

Our Freeze-Dried Rich Pericarp Mangosteen Capsules begin with the thick outer pericarp of Garcinia mangostana.

Pericarp research describes tocopherols alongside organic acids, fatty acids and other plant constituents. After harvest, our pericarp is freeze-dried and prepared for capsules.(2), (3)
